What to Look for in a South East Nursery Food Supplier
The South East covers a wide geographic spread — from dense suburban areas in Surrey and Kent to rural settings in East Sussex and Oxfordshire. Coverage area is often the first thing to check, since some suppliers serve specific counties rather than the full region. Beyond that, three things matter most:
Ask for menus mapped against the September 2025 "provide, limit, avoid" framework, with age-specific portion sizes specified for under-ones, one-to-twos, and two-to-fives. If a supplier references "school food standards" rather than EYFS nutrition guidance, they're using the wrong framework for an early years setting.
Check directly at food.gov.uk. South East ratings are issued by district and borough councils — Wealden, Worthing, Reading, Oxfordshire — so the rating on the supplier's own site may be out of date. Aim for a current rating of 5 at the production kitchen specifically.
A static allergen chart does not meet the operational standard expected under EYFS and Natasha's Law. You need a system that tracks each child's allergen profile against each meal, with clear labelling at service. Ask specifically how the supplier handles newly diagnosed allergies mid-contract.

EYFS Compliance in the South East: The Current Position
The September 2025 EYFS statutory nutrition guidance is the operative framework for all registered early years settings in England, including those across Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire. The guidance classifies foods into "provide," "limit," and "avoid" categories by age group — a more structured approach than the previous statutory framework.
Age-specific requirements differ meaningfully across the nursery age range. Foods appropriate for two-to-fives are not automatically appropriate for under-ones, and suppliers working from a single generic menu are not in compliance. From November 2025, Ofsted inspectors in the South East region are applying the revised guidance in early years inspections — settings should expect questions about menu compliance and allergen management as a standard part of the inspection process.
South East settings fall under standard Ofsted early years inspection arrangements. The guidance applies uniformly across all local authority areas; South East local authority early years teams — including those in Kent, East Sussex, Surrey, and Hampshire — can provide additional support on implementation. The South East's proximity to London means some settings also have access to London-based suppliers with regional coverage, which broadens the supplier market available to settings in the western part of the region.
